Stool, Lobi; Burkina Faso

Stool, Lobi; Burkina Faso
Wood; H. 24"

An elderly man reclines on a stool while smoking his pipe. Such stools become associated with the spirit of their owners and after the owner's death are placed in a shrine as a means of communication between generations. Women's stools among the Lobi present four rather than three legs. This stool was carved by the Lobi master Sikire Kanbire of Gaoua. Another stool, virtually identical and attributed to Sikire, can be found in Kunst und Religion der Lobi, figure 190.
