Mask, Baule; Ivory Coast
Wood, pigment; H. 16 1/4"
Masks are danced primarily for entertainment,
although some retain a sacred and mysterious reputation
and are performed only for a male audience where
any contact with women or children is distinctly
harmful. Performances take place either as communal
theater or as part of funerals. Like those of their
Yaure and Guro neighbors, Baule masked dance performances
rank among the finest in West Africa.
