Maskettes, Akan; Ghana
Cast gold-washed silver; 2" / 2 1/2" / 4"
The Akan made and used gold and gold-washed
maskettes as symbols of prestige and status. From
the simple mask-like classical face to the almost
naturalistic bearded mask to the longheaded, mouthless
aberrant, this group of three maskettes illustrates
some of the rich diversity and artistic excellence
inherent in the corpus.
