Figural post, Yoruba; Nigeria
Wood, pigment; H. 34 1/4"
This lovely post probably decorated
the veranda of Yoruba palace or served as a support
in a shrine. Carved by the master Areogun of
Osi, this post depicts a female figure with
long pendulous breasts, juxtaposing maturity and
youthful fertility. At the base of the post, remains
of the figures of two children and what may be a
Shango wand can still be seen. The elaborate
adornment and complex coiffure depict a woman of
rank. Interestingly, unusual features of this post
are the deep incisions on this "Great Mother's"
upper chest and the almost vestigial treatment of
the hands. Fr. Kevin Carroll photographed a similar
post at the palace of Ekan that he attributed to
Adako of Ekan. The soft, feminine features
and powerful forms work together to create an unusual
balance of protective and sensual feminine power.
