Dance crest, Igbo; Nigeria
Wood, cloth, pigments, iron; H. 31 1/2"
Masks may come in all shapes and sizes.
Though we are used to imagining most masks simply
covering the face, or occasionally perched atop
the head, some large examples such as this tower
above the dancer, creating a stunning visual presentation
and dramatic performance. Probably created by the
northern Igbo, this dance crest is also related
stylistically to some examples made by the southern
Idoma. Though the aquiline nose and large features
may, not seem to be particularly African, there
is no indication that this mask represents a foreigner.
