Mask, Pende (Kasai); D.R.C. Congo
Wood, pigment; L. 22"
Sharing both a masquerade and an architectural
function, the Panya Ngombe mask of the eastern

at the end of initiation festivities. Versions of

on a paramount chief's dwelling.
