Ritual object, Lulua; D.R.C. Congo
Wood; H. 13"

Little can be said of this strange bi-frontal object. It appears to have had no utilitarian use yet seems to have been well handled. The style of the faces points to an origin somewhere in the Kasai region between the Pende and Bena Lulua. Although collected nearly a century ago, this object, possibly for divination or cult paraphernalia, remains so deeply removed from any context that it exists as a lovely, though mysterious, curiosity.
